I went to my Steam library (properties>local files) and verified the integrity of the game cache, but it still didn't work.

I tried reinstalling the game. However, Steam didn't really uninstall it. The name was grayed out in my library and the desktop shortcut was removed, but all the files were still on my hard drive (including my saves). So that didn't work either.
