Backlit Keyboard Laptop Lenovo
Some Lenovo laptops have keyboard backlights, and they can be turned on using Fn
+ Space
. There are three states: off, normal and bright.
To turn on/off the backlight, press Fn + Spacebar on the keyboard to change the modes of the keyboard backlight. Selected ThinkPad R, T, X and Z-series laptops have the ThinkLight as shown below. Lenovo Ideapad 520S 80X200EMIN Ci5 7th Gen 8GB 256. Lenovo Ideapad 500 80NT00L3IN Ci7 8GB 1TB Win10 4G.
When I start Ubuntu, these laptops always default back to a burning sun screen brightness and the keyboard lights off.
I want a medium brightness and keyboard lights on by default, because I usually use this laptop in dark environments.
The backlight is easy. Internet is filled with information about this.echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
But how do I turn on the keyboard backlights with a command?I've been looking here but it seems to do nothing:/sys/class/leds/tpacpi::thinklight
Updates
I tried for i in {1.32}; do xset led $i; done
but nothing changes. Perhaps the keyboard backlight for Lenovo laptops has a proprietary driver and can only be controlled through tpacpi
?
Also tried for i in $(find /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/leds/ grep /brightness); do echo 255 > $i; done
of no avail.

then executed:
keyboard will fade out. Please see the following link if it helps:
This is the bash script I use:
Works on IBM ThinkPad X260 with Ubuntu 16.04.
Outlook 2016 stuck at loading profile. Ok, it works fine with me with this gist:
- First of all download the gist above, I renamed it to
ThinkLight.c
instead oftmp.c
. Make sure you have glib-2.0 installed:
Compile
ThinkLight.c
as the following:Load
ec_sys
module ( this can be added to/etc/modules
on boot ):Finally execute
ThinkLight
with level argument (0, 1, or 2):
Special thanks to hadess for making this happen!
My T450s would not re-enable keyboard backlight upon resume with kernels older then 4.6. FWIW, with 4.6 now, keyboard backlight is set to the brightness it had before suspend.

Most of the mid to high-end laptops today offer backlit keyboards. Backlit keyboards make typing easier at low light conditions, especially for those who cannot do touch typing.
Backlit keyboards or illuminated keyboards can be turned on or off using keyboard shortcuts on all laptops. For instance, I can use Fn + Spacebar key to turn on the keyboard backlight on my ThinkPad T series laptop.
Many laptop users often ask if there is a dedicated setting to adjust the backlit keyboard brightness in Windows 10. The answer is both yes and no.
Adjusting backlit keyboard brightness in Windows 10
While, sadly, there is no built-in setting in Windows 10 to adjust or change backlit keyboard settings, some OEMs do offer their own software to change default settings of backlit keyboard brightness. For instance, Dell Windows 10 laptops offer settings to turn on or off the backlit keyboard, adjust the keyboard brightness, automatically turn off the backlight after 5/10/30/60/300 seconds of inactivity.
Dell users can open Keyboard properties dialog and then switch to Backlight tab to see all keyboard brightness settings.
Sony also offers options to adjust default settings of keyboard brightness on some of its models. You can open VAIO Control Center and then click Keyboard and Mouse and Backlit Keyboard to see settings. Here, you can configure the software to automatically turn on or off the backlit keyboard to automatically turn on or off based on ambient light. Like Dell, Sony also offers an option to automatically turn off the keyboard backlight after inactivity of keyboard operations for X amount of time.
Lenovo doesn’t offer much to change the default settings of backlit keyboard. However, you can set the keyboard brightness to medium or high brightness using Fn + Space hotkey. That is, if you press Fn + Space once, the driver turns on the backlit keyboard with medium brightness. Pressing Fn + Spacebar again changes the brightness to high. Pressing the hotkey again will turn off the backlit keyboard.

You can find settings to automatically turn off keyboard backlight after a certain period of inactivity by opening Boot Camp Control Panel. To open it, right-click on the Boot Camp icon in the system tray and then click Boot Camp Control Panel option.
Microsoft Surface users can use Alt + F2 to increase the keyboard brightness and Alt + F1 to decrease the brightness.
OEMs such as HP, Asus, and Toshiba don’t offer settings to adjust keyboard brightness.
